To fit all the books, we expanded to the upstairs, and now have two floors of fantastic, nearly new used books and about 1200 hand-picked new titles. We were especially glad to have this location when the rent at our original location was raised by over 20%, forcing us to regretfully close that original store and move the entire inventory to Carytown. They are not to be confused with the Fall River chow mein sandwich, which lack bean sprouts and, often, meat. The origin of the chow mein goes back centuries. The chop suey sandwich is a cheap and filling concoction of roast pork or chicken, onions, celery and bean sprouts cooked in a thickened soy gravy and served on a hamburger bun. A chow mein is considered a real, traditional Chinese dish, whereas the chop suey is an American version of chinese cuisine. Needing to give this second location its own personality, we began stocking select new publications that might not be found elsewhere in Richmond. The real difference between a Chow Mein and a Chop Suey dish is the authenticity and the origin of the dish. In 2006, we opened a second location, Chop Suey Tuey, in Carytown.
Over the years, Chop Suey Books has kept this vision while growing into a Richmond mainstay, participating in and helping to organize various community events. Of course, "Chop Suey" refers to a dish of food, though the phrase is an Americanization of the Mandarin "Za Sui," meaning "a little bit of this, a little bit of that." This translation applies perfectly to Chop Suey Books' vision of combining a solid collection of gently used literature, art, photography, architecture, design, philosophy, poetry, theater, film and the like. Their rusted sign was still attached to the side of the wall, so we adopted the name. Our original location at 1317 West Cary Street was the former home of George's Chop Suey, a neighborhood restaurant and watering hole that lasted through the early 1970s.
